Kaz Hirai finally starts tripping balls, doesn’t see Nintendo as competition

Well, fuck me.
If this doesn’t paint a picture of how bad things are over at PlayStation – nothing will. Even here at MDF we know that Nintendo, the way things are going, are unbeatable (unless Microsoft REALLY do something drastic to even the score… oh, I don’t know, say buy 51% of Nintendo). We know that no matter what anyone says, about how Nintendo are not in the same category as Microsoft and Sony in an attempt to soften the blow that the underdog became king, they’re in the same game and they’re in it to win it – like the rest of us.
So what did Kaz Hirai say, that made us all realise that the toll of the failing PlayStation brand was now having an effect on Kaz’s health and mind?
“This is not meant in terms of numbers, or who’s got the biggest install base, or who’s selling most in any particular week or month, but I’d like to think that we continue official leadership in this industry.”
He goes on to say…
“It’s difficult to talk about Nintendo, because we don’t look at their console as being a competitor. They’re a different world, and we operate in our world – that’s the kind of way I look at things.”
It seems, Kaz, that your world is completely different. Completely. Different. He finally manages to say, in his mentally impaired state…
“And with the Xbox – again, I can’t come up with one word to fit. You need a word that describes something that lacks longevity.”
I’m fairly confident that there are areas about Kaz Hirai that also lack longevity.
Joking aside, this is what anyone would say, if their division that represents a sizable percentage of the organisation and overall brand of the parent organisation is starting to crash down, hard. This sounds like the talk of someone falling from their bubble that they once thought was unbreakable. Kaz states that being the industry leader isn’t based on an install base, or how many units are being sold in a month etc (well just what is it based on?), but still fails to mention why and what makes them the industry leader.
We’re confident that Kaz spends many hours working late into the night, attempting to build a time machine (powered by PlayStation 2, as PlayStation 3 is too hard to develop for) that will transport him back into the year 2000 where Kaz was allowed to kick Sir Howard Stringer’s ass while he wasn’t looking from behind. Them days are long, long gone.
